Makana Provisions is founded by Ignacio Fleishour, a consumate adventurer, conservationist, educator, entrepeuner, chef and cultural practitioner.

Ignacio is blessed to have Kiowa Apache and Cherokee heritage and to be the receptacle of many stories passed down to him from his Apache grandfather; he is one of three in the world to speak his dialect of Apache! He holds an M.A. in Anthropology/Archaeology from the University of Arizona. Ignacio has studied and lived with native elders and traditional medicine practitioners from Apache, Dineh, Mixtec, Aztec, Oaxacan, Queche, Nazca and Hawaiian heritage from Arizona, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Oaxaca Mexico, Nazca Peru and Hawaii.

In his practices, Ignacio imparts the knowledge passed to him by his grandparents and parents as well as the elders he has worked with and continues to work with in the community. Having hunted, lived off the land, farmed, ranched and worked on trails and conservancy throughout the world, he has come to one truth…

“there is a spirit in the earth which gives us life and the spirit imparts knowledge and awareness. How we treat this earth and the spirit of place directly impacts our well being physically, mentally and emotionally. We should treat PLACE wherever we are and go with awareness and become family with where we stand, for place feed us. The earth is healing and feeding us constantly, treat food as medicine and help feed others. Spirit is all there is, life is simpler when we acknowledge and see spirit in all we do to our earth, community, family, and our selves.” FEED PEOPLE SPIRIT.

Makana Provisions an exploration in Sustainability, Featuring Hawaii Venison Jerky.

Venison Jerky by Makana Provisions started with humble origins selling venison online and out of the back of a pick up truck. We now distribute our venison exclusively through H&W and Chef Zone through Y. Hata. We are proud to have trained and shared our story with 30 sales staff on their team. This has allowed us to grow and expand our sustainability efforts in Hawaii. Our efforts began in 2008 with lobbying to get USDA FSIS ability to sell wild harvested venison. It was not until 2012 that we began marketing venison. Makana Provisions is owned and founded Chef Ignacio…

Besides Hawaii Venison and Venison Jerky, Makana Provisions is honored to be in collaboration with local ethical ranchers for sourcing and selling Hawaii Beef. We are leading the push for high-quality, pasture-raised beef, operating on Molokai, big island and Kauai. Makana Provisions is also working with ranchers around the islands and Molokai to bring fresh lamb and chicken to your door. We are currently raising cattle, chickens and lamb in unique clean ways using traditional Hawaii grasses and foods to see improvement in quality of life for our animals and increased taste for consumption in Hawaii. Our role is in marketing, bringing fresh meats to the public and retail, creating value added products and using every part of every animal harvested.

We bring you fresh and frozen local clean meats without hormones or antibiotics ever.

Our cattle are grass fed, raised, finished and harvested in Hawaii (never in a feed lot and open range all their lives). Herds graze in mauka pasture-lands on Oahu, Maui, Molokai and Big island, spending their entire life in Hawaii with no added hormones or antibiotics. “We work with ranchers and on our project on Molokai practicing and finishing meat with alternative feed for consistency using traditional medicinal Hawaiian plants and endemic grasses to improve the overall health and well being of the cattle and the land.

Through our goals , we are also creating open range feed to supplement grasses, our goal is to finish cattle to have consistent flavor, marbling and finish weight for much higher grade meat than is currently available. We are working towards the opportunity to demonstrate the power of regenerative grazing to build soil, store carbon, restore hydro-logic function to the landscape, and protect our marine habitats from runoff.

Makana Provisions will be increasingly available at retailers across Hawaiishoppers can look for the Makana logo currently at Times Super Markets, Waianae Store, and Kokua Market. Stay tuned for our meat delivery options.

Sustainability will be achieved when we as a community see the dependence of our well being is directly tied to the well being of the health of our soils, roots and water.

Traditionally, all beef was grass fed

But in the United States today what is commercially available is almost all feedlot beef. The reason? Feedlot beef can be raised faster, making it more profitable. Seventy-five years ago, steers were 4 or 5 years old at slaughter. Today, they are 14-16 months old. You can’t take a grass-fed beef calf from a birth weight of 80 pounds to 800 pounds in a little more than a year on grass.

Our animals are designed to forage.

Feedlot beef are fed grain, primarily corn, in order to make them as fat as possible as fast as possible in commercial feedlots. Grass fed beef has been found to contain fewer calories and to be lower in both overall fat and artery-clogging saturated fat than grain fed beef and is higher in protein.
